Goethe said, “Whatever you think you can do, or believe you can do, begin it, because action has magic, grace and power in it.”
This is an amazingly succinct statement which offers hope to all creatives. It reminds us that when we surrender to being a beginner that we can then truly embrace the creative process.
Here we have a new beginning in the new studio.
I find that one of the things my students struggle with is beginning new works and one of the most problematic things is choosing their subject. They tend to get a drama story going in their heads and next thing you kow it is all too hard.
We need to be real. Making art isn’t about drama it is always grounded in reality. The more truth we can bring to our creation the better we will be able to connect our vision to others. In order to do this we need to believe in ourselves and the validity of our own vision. It is the belief in ourselves, that allows us to begin.
A great idea Julia Cameron has for moving past stuck beginnings is to make a list of at least 20 things that are small creative steps. When we can do these things, we reaffirm our own self worth and gain a sense of achievement. We can also often gain inspiration along the way. perhaps that old book you find when decluttering, will inspire you to go and do a pen and ink drawing class…. The things you do don’t even have to lead to a big thing. You might just go for a walk. Or it might be a smaller step towards a larger project e.g. in order to have a bigger studio, something I needed to do to move towards that was to paint the walls before we all moved in there. Here’s what part of my list looks like:
1. Download an ijournal for my creativity tips.
2. Reorganize my home creating space after the studio move.
3. Tidy my office, so I can think straight.
4. Start doing yoga/meditating again – creating a empty head space to allow creativity to flow.
5. Go through my wardrobe and throw out all the things I’m not wearing! Yikes that’s challenging, however it will free up some space to allow new energy to flow in. Decluttering is one of the best things we can do on an energetic level to get the energy around us flowing again. I highly recommend it, whether its in your wardrobe, pantry, storage cupboards or garage.
6. Do an artist date.
7. Go for a walk.
